Here is Ross Jacobs again, taking a different approach to Henry and his ingrained habits. Yes, for sure it is important to check thoroughly that we are only dealing with habit, and not a pain problem, but if that is the case, this piece of lateral thinking (and, we all like lateral!) seems to show results.

Happy New Year to you and your horse(s)! Are you dreaming of plans for 2020? Did you make any New Year’s resolutions? Do any of the plans, dreams and aspirations go against habit and personal inclination? Do you ever wonder what your horse thinks about (apparently) sudden changes in strategy?
Meet Guy, a horse of deep habits, not easily shifted. This is what Ross Jacobs has to say about it: https://www.facebook.com/275719312528545/photos/a.275872839179859/2199801203453670/ Apart from the interesting observations in this story, it also takes us to Australia, and the terrible suffering there we are witnessing just now… In Scotland we do not (need to) do that very often – but let’s pray for some rain! Since for this month, I moved away somewhat from horsemanship and engaged more with our human characteristics and the age-old question of "Who am I?", let's just stay there and listen to the experiences of others. - Just blank out the commercial bits.
Enjoy! On forgiveness with Andrea Wady (starts properly after about 3 mins) Best wishes for a wonderful Christmas - and lots of horse-time in-between! So who is this guy speaking on these videos? In no particular order, Perry Wood is a musician, a horse trainer and riding teacher, and a 'communication expert': one of his books is on "People Whispering". Here is an excerpt, which might go towards the concept of Awareness - towards other people and horses:
"Holding the space means being fully present when we are with someone: we give them all the room they need in which to express themselves. We stay in a peaceful state and create a stillness around us, allowing the person to bring whatever they need to say. We don't analyse, or judge what they say; we listen with the whole of our being, not only to what they are saying with their words, but we also listen to their energy and expression through their essence. Holding the Space means that we give someone our full attention inside and out: it is one of the greatest gifts we can give." In that spirit - here are the next two short videos: Patience Awareness It's that time of the year again, and it speaks to all of our senses: sparkles delight the eye, frosty mornings taste like champagne, the scent of fresh wood shavings is so comforting, and that happy sound of horses, chewing hay after a good ride out... A good feeling, inside and out.
What follows are a series of 4 very short videos - so easy to understand: yes, we all know, have been told this time and again, we have tried it countless times, blah blah - and yet, try again. Living these values requires constant reminding and self-awareness an d it is anything but easy (nor does it come naturally - to me). Here are the 4 questions?
Here are the first two videos. Enjoy! On judgement Right, or wrong? Having thought about desensitisation, about how much is desirable? Or about what sort of a horse do I really want?, here are some more practical and immediate ideas on training methods and the thinking behind these from Cathrine Fodstad again:

Time-out ......comes from the world of team sports and "allows the coaches of either team to communicate with the team, to determine strategy or inspire morale." - Let's start with the rider calling for time-out, and who knows? Maybe at some point we will be smart enough to hear when the horse takes on that role? Archives
