RETURNING TO HERNING
Icelandic horse riders from all over the world are invited to make their way - virtually - to the World Championships in Herning, DK, 1-8th August 2021
RETURNING TO HERNING is the name of the FEIF virtual ride to Herning, Denmark, host of the World Championships 1st - 8th August 2021. Riders start from home - wherever that is - and ride in the direction of Herning to be part of the biggest festival of the Icelandic horse in 2021. This is the 9th year of the virtual ride, which takes Icelandic horse riders from all over the world to the central event of any given year: Berlin, DE in 2013, Landsmót at Hella 2014, Herning, DK 2015, Landsmót at Hólar 2016, Oirschot, NL 2018, Landsmót in Reykjavík 2018, Berlin, DE in 2019, Landsmót at Hella 2020 (this event was cancelled) and now again to Herning, DK, 2021.
HOW?
The idea is simple: (1) you calculate the distance from your home to Herning, DK - here , and (2) register for the ride - riders can join at any time over the year. (3) you keep a record of all your rides out into the countryside; (4) and gradually you will make your way to the venue, you will be surprised how fast the miles clock up. BONUS: you will meet a very welcoming, friendly group of Icelandic horse riders from all over the world on Facebook, and over the years this has grown into a strong network, often resulting in real meetings, real friendship, rather than remaining purely virtual.
The ride started on Sun, 9th August 2020. From that date onwards, you take a note of - and add up - all kilometres you spend in the saddle hacking out. Every month you send in your total ridden km, and your personal total distance will be displayed on a common scoreboard. You will be astonished to see how far we all get.
Depending on where you live, the distance to Denmark may be quite daunting. This is why riders may form a team, and add their ridden distances together to get to the destination. The size of the team is somewhat determined by the total distance you have to achieve. Additional riders can join in at any time. Also remember, our horses are social creatures, they love good company. Team work is half the work, and shared fun is double the fun!
Once you have registered, please also join our Facebook group (Returning to Herning), become part of an amazing community with a common aim, and share the highlights of your ride. And for those of us lucky enough to actually be at the World Championships, there will be an opportunity to meet other riders from the virtual ride face to face.
